Elizabeth Blackwell Essay - 1610 Words
Elizabeth Blackwell Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female physician in America, struggled with sexual prejudice to earn her place in history. She was born in Bristol, England on February 3, 1821 to a liberal and wealthy family. She was the third daughter in a family of nine children. Her father, Samuel Blackwell, believed in the value of education and knowledge and hired a governess for the girls, even though many girls were not educated in those days. In 1832, the family sugar cane plantation went bankrupt, forcing the family to move to America. As a young lady, Elizabeth Blackwell was similar to other women her age. She had an emotional and passionate nature and had many romantic pursuits. However, in 1838, she movedâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Her abolitionist leanings made her unpopular in her new community, as did her extreme stands on womens rights. She was very vocal about what she felt about women, saying in a speech once if society will not admit of womens free development, then society must be remodeled. After a couple of years in Kentucky, she was more than ready for a change. That change came as a suggestion from the lips of a woman dying of cancer. Mary Donaldson, a long-time friend of Elizabeth Blackwell, suggested that a female doctor would have eased her pain and torment during her battle with cancer. Elizabeth took this suggestion to heart, and actively began a rebellion against unjust societal prejudices. The challenges of her new task fascinated her, as did the eventual opportunities of the medical field to escape societies sexual restrictions. With a single-minded determinedness, she clamped down on her dislike of ugly things to study medicine to improve the conditions for women in the future. Librarians and Term Papers
Librarians and Term PapersLiterary analysis is a major analytical area in the humanities. It focuses on the many ways that we read and interpret information. It often involves research and critique. There are many different types of literary analysis. The most common is analyzing and critiquing texts for their literary value. People who do this usually read widely and often with critical intent. They look for specific flaws in the text, and they sometimes go beyond just criticism. They may also try to interpret the meaning of the text in terms of their own life experiences or even other people's experiences. In the humanities, reading in 'traditional' terms means studying the literary form. A different word is used, however, for the reading of the text. The textual analysis involves critical interpretation of the text, looking for subtle and sometimes not-so-subtle clues about the author's intent, or the intended audience. One of the more common techniques for literary analysis is calle d the 'form analysis' technique. This is a method in which a writer will try to figure out how the literary form of the text works, what can be inferred from the structure of the text, and how those all fit together.Literary analysis can help you understand your own writing better. You'll find that literary analysis can make your writing much easier to understand, and you'll also be able to use it to fine-tune and enhance the way you present information to readers.Literary analysis is a broad and general term for an analysis of a work of literature. This analysis could take on a number of different forms, but it can usually focus on the literary form or the literary critic's approach to reading a work of literature. That means literary analysis can be used in a wide variety of contexts - from understanding literary criticism to understanding literary theories.Humanities major who is trying to prepare for the AP Lit exam may need to go back and read their term papers in detail. The A P Lit term papers often involve a lot of analysis, or multiple readings of some kind. This can make it difficult to understand a concept or to do the correct interpretation of a work.Term papers can be a good way to study for the AP Lit exam, but they don't offer a full course in reading and analyzing literature. Santa Sangre by Alejandro Jodorowsky Impact of Parentsââ¬â¢ Death on a Child Free Essays
Religiously grotesque and lustful, yet surrealistically beautiful is the film Santa Sangre (1989) by cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky. The film portrays, in a brutal manner, the impact brought upon the deaths of a mother and father unto a child left orphan. Leading role Fenix (Axel Jodorowsky), after witnessing his fathersââ¬â¢ suicide (slit throat) and later knowing that his father had cut-off his motherââ¬â¢s arms before slicing himself, grows up heavily traumatized. We will write a custom essay sample on Santa Sangre by Alejandro Jodorowsky: Impact of Parentsââ¬â¢ Death on a Child or any similar topic only for you Order Now He is first shown in the film, in adulthood, inside of a mental institution, naked, eating a whole fish, uncooked. With this film you will take a plunge in cold, very deep water: so many colors and shapes; so many mysteries; fantastic and terrifying monsters; in short, the human mind. Alejandro Jodorowsky achieves another astonishing masterpiece by bringing his own personal background into the film. In his early years, he learned the arts of trapeze and miming; he even studied with the great Marcel Marceau. One of his first employers was a Circus in Chile, his hometown. There he took a job as a clown and started to absorb the mysterious ways and trickeries the public awes and cheers at circuses. Besides the colorful clowns and the saddening mimes, there is also another fundamental element that takes place in the film: religion. Fenixââ¬â¢s mother, Concha, is the religious and ââ¬Å"moralâ⬠element in the film. She worships a Mexican church by the name of Santa Sangre (ââ¬Å"Holy Bloodâ⬠). She acquires a divine strength, or a dark power, that will forever haunt her orphan child, making the viewer think twice if the mother is in fact dead, alive, or a hallucination; or all three put together!. She lost her arms to her adulterous husband, but her son could still be of use, somehow; come to think of it, he still has a fresh pair of arms. The acclaim and height of this film comes not from the awards and/or nominations it has earned, but from the public itself, from the cult followers of this great and terror stricken director. Having directed cult movies like El Topo, in 1970, and The Holy Mountain, in 1973, in 1989 he comes back with Santa Sangre to give his audience another taste of surrealism and horror; of blood and family, which his followers then, would have expected nothing less than a great work of art. And it delivered, big time. The soundtrack really caught my interest and attention. I found it equally amazing and horrifying how the use of classic Latin hits made the movie even more haunting, more intriguing, more agitated. More importantly, was that the soundtrack brought in even more culture into the film. The music very much compensated the fact that the dialogues were all in English even though the film is set in Mexico and the majority of the cast is Hispanic. Anyway, if music is something that catches your attention, then I am sure you wonââ¬â¢t mind me listing a few: ââ¬Å"Besame Muchoâ⬠by Consuelo Velazquez, ââ¬Å"Lupitaâ⬠by Damaso Perez Prado, ââ¬Å"Cucurrucucu palomaâ⬠by Tomas Mendez, and ââ¬Å"Dejame Llorarâ⬠by Alfonso Esparza Oteo. The Internet Movie Database (www. imdb. com) is a pretty tough crowd when it comes to rating movies. IMDB hits this movie, with over 5000 voters, with a very accurate rating of 7. 6 out of 10. That is a pretty high rating when it comes to a terror film listed in IMDB. Moreover, acclaimed film critic Robert Ebert writes ââ¬Å"Santa Sangre is a throwback to the golden age, to the days when filmmakers had bold individual visions and were not timidly trying to duplicate the latest mass-market formulas. â⬠He is definitely right, so please: get up; buy; hit play. Professional grooming free essay sample
Todays workforce comes from varied cultural and social backgrounds, with differing standards and behaviors. These may not always be in sync with the norms of the organization. The grooming and business etiquette program is targeted at making the participants learn about behaviors that are appropriate for the workplace. one should only wear expensive clothes. But wearing oneââ¬â¢s best professional attire to work is expected. If you are serious about your career then you need to take personal grooming a little more seriously. Where I have found slack in personal grooming, I have also found a slack in self confidence. When people take their appearance and their grooming seriously, it shows up in their attitude, and reflects in the way they talk and the way they think about their goals. Donââ¬â¢t let your designation decide your dressing for you; let your grooming be led by your vision. Put your best foot forward in everything you do, including your appearance. To be able to function and fit in in todayââ¬â¢s society, you must make sure your personal grooming is up to standard. Job opportunities, relationship possibilities, and invitations to parties and other social events are all inextricably linked to how you present yourself to the world. Grooming is simply one of those things that there is no excuse not to take time and effort with. The poll has shown that looking good in the workplace may be the key to career advancement, with 78. 6 per cent of respondents believing there is a correlation between being well-groomed and growing professionally. Good personal grooming and style shows an interest in the position à as well as being demonstrative of good character ââ¬Å"Quite clearly, personal appearance is of importance to many employers and employees in the region. It would seem to have a major influence on decisions to hire candidates or not, while good grooming may continue to have an impact from within the workplace, affecting the possibilities of promotion,â⬠ââ¬Å"If your office has an agreed-upon dress code,â⬠Masri says, ââ¬Å"then you should have no problems. But if it doesnââ¬â¢t, its up to you to get it right. Always remember that understated elegance really makes a difference. When starting a new job, always keep in mind that how you dress will tell your boss and others in the organization how you see yourself and how you approach the job. â⬠ââ¬Å"Despite the high correlation between personal grooming and professional success, this does not mean spending an exorbitant amount in keeping appearances. ââ¬Å"spend only a moderate amount of their income on grooming and clothes. FIRST IMPRESSION IS THE LAST IMPRESSION Personal grooming is very important. Your appearance says a lot A picture is worth a thousand words. Remember this when preparing to meet with a prospective employer. The picture you create will greatly influence your chances of being hired. Most employers form a first impression during the first seven seconds of a meeting. Not much is said is this short time; early judgment is based strictly on appearance. Furthermore, studies reveal that employers consistently ask the question, Does the individual look right for the job? First impressions are very important, and never so much as in the corporate/business field. Its not just a matter of bathing, and not stinking. If you want to win that customer, get that contract, you want to look and feel like you are professional, competent, and able. So you dress accordingly. Many of us object to being judged for employment based on how we look. We prefer to be hired because of our skills and abilities, not because of our dress and grooming. BUT like it or not, appearance is important. While the college campus may be the perfect forum in which to exhibit your flair for the latest in fashion style, the interview is not the place to do so. Do not go out and but a whole new wardrobe. Go for quality over quantity. One or two well-chosen business suits will serve you all the way to the first day on the job and beyond. Then, when you are making some money (and have a chance to see what the standard dress is for the company), you can begin to round out your wardrobe. Employers hire people they believe will fit into their organization. Skills, experience, and qualifications are important, but so are dress and grooming. Your appearance expresses motivation and professionalism. When in doubt, err on the conservative side and make a statement of who you are. Your clothing and grooming should create the image that will help you get the job offer. Some basic guidelines to follow are: Be clean and neat, including your fingernails, teeth, shoes, hair and face Conservative two-piece business suit in a basic color Empty pockets-no bulges or tinkling coins/keys, etc. The clothes you wear affect all your attitude and confidence levels. When people take the time to dress for success, they tend to feel good about themselves. Image alone will not win the job offer, but it will go along way in building respect. personal grooming is also important Personal grooming is very important. So letââ¬â¢s start with the basics. 1. Hair. Your hair is one of the most. if not the most, noticable things that people look (and judge) at when they see you for the first time. You must take care of your hair. Frequent shampoo and conditioner use, and regular haircuts are ââ¬Å"must-dosâ⬠when it comes to your overall grooming routine. If you look after your hair properly, it goes a long way to giving you a ââ¬Å"million dollarâ⬠look that everyone aims for. 2. Nails. Fingernails and toenails must be kept clean and trimmed. This is one of those things that also goes a long way to showing other people that you take grooming seriously and you pay attention to the smallest details. Clean fingernails are important in the professional workplace and also in situations like casual lunch and classy dinner dates. 3. Skin. Obviously, our skin is one of the most exposed (and therefore prone to damage) body parts. Try using skincare products such as exfoliators, body washes, and moisturisers to keep your skin looking clean and fresh. When your skin looks good, it has a tremendous positive flow-on effect, making you feel and better and more confident. 4. Clothing. In my experience, the best clothing for the ââ¬Å"well-groomedâ⬠look are solid colours that donââ¬â¢t draw too much attention. Black, grey and white clothes are usually best, although donââ¬â¢t be afraid to wear something a bit attention-grabbing if youââ¬â¢re going out on a date or hoping to impress someone. Basically, just take care of your clothes, and wear ones that fit properly. Teeth. It goes without saying that clean teeth are healthy teeth, so try and make sure you brush at least twice a day and maintain good oral care. Mouthwash is good for keeping your breath fresh too. So there you have a few personal grooming pointers. When it comes to landing that executive position at work, or wooing a potential partner, make sure your grooming is up to scratch beforehand. Youââ¬â¢ll find that your chances of getting ahead in both your professional and dating life are magnified a hundred times. There are no absolute rules regarding dress. Your selection will vary based on your occupation, location, and preference. A business suit for a construction job or overalls for an office job would not be appropriate dress! The goal is to look the part, and your appearance should be consistent with your occupation. Neat, clean work clothes would be suitable for assembly, production, or warehouse positions. Sales and office positions require business clothes. A conservative suit would be the recommended style for professional and managerial positions. Common sense and good taste are the best guides in selecting clothing for the interview. Avoid faddish styles and loud colors. Jewelry should be conservative and kept to a minimum. Clothing should fit comfortably. You want the employer to focus on your skills, not on your clothes. Grooming Personal grooming is just as important as what you wear. You may select the right clothes, but neglecting personal hygiene can ruin the image you wish to present. Review the following grooming checklist before meeting with the employer. ITEMGROOMING HairClean, trimmed, and neatly combed or arranged. Facial Hair (men)Freshly shaved; mustache or beard neatly groomed. FingernailsNeat, clean, and trimmed. TeethBrushed and fresh breath BreathBeware of foods which may leave breath odor. Beware of tobacco, alcohol, and coffee odor. Use a breath mint if needed. BodyFreshly bathed/showered; use deodorant. Remove body piercings, tongue rings, and cover tattoos if possible. Make-up (Women)Use sparingly and be natural looking. Perfumes/ Colognes/ After ShaveUse sparingly or none at all. Your scent should not linger after you leave. The primary goal is to feel good about the way you look and project a positive image. When you feel good about yourself, you naturally convey confidence and a positive attitude. These nonverbal messages are as important in the interview as the verbal skills you use in selling your qualifications. You make sure your hair is groomed. If youre a guy, you give yourself a smooth shave every day. Beards are okay for IT weenies and senior execs negative points Grooming is necessary for the corporate world or society in general, because you do not want to offend others. you stink who is going to take you seriously? or want to be around you? its just plain ol proffesionalism. If you have bad breath I definitely stay away from you! Also it is uncomfortable to be around someone whose, say armpits stink? and you want to tell them because maybe they dont know so you have to talk to your boss and they in turn have to talk to that offendor and its just plain uncomfortable all around! positve points it changes the view of people towards you. SMELL GOOD Investing in a deodorant, perfume and even some tic tac is a good way to keep yourself smelling fresh. There is no greater turn off than body odour and bad breath.

The Trade-Offs of Technological Advancements essays
The Trade-Offs of Technological Advancements essays With continual advances in health, science, and technology, all aspects of a person's life are greatly improved. Once devastating diseases are now better understood and sometimes even treatable. With transportation advances, people easily hop on a jet and soar across the world in a matter of hours. Similarly, information is changing by the second, with the Internet providing immediate 24/7 access anywhere, anytime. Technology has even changed entertainment, as X-Box or online players vie worldwide. However, there are always trade-offs in life, and it is not any different from these medical, transportation and communication advances. During the 20th century and now into the 21st century there has been continuous progress in the health field. One of the most notable is the discovery of penicillin by bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928 when he observed colonies of a bacterium. This was the beginning of curing numerous illnesses with vaccines and antibiotics that greatly reduced the annual death rate. The average seniors, people over 50 years old, are living longer and healthier lives than ever before. The life expectancy is greater than ever in the U.S., just about 78 years, according to the Center for Disease Control. According to Encarta, however, medical enhancements brought an increase in other diseases. Since the arrival of "miracle drugs," cancer rates have risen despite significant improvements in treatment. Cancer and heart disease were the leading causes of death at the beginning of the 21st century, partly due to the increased aging population and ability to cure other ailments. In addition, an unhealthy lifestyle is becoming more common due to increased well being, with too many Americans eating high-fat foods and high-calorie snacks and not exercising. Automobiles, fast trains, and supersonic jets allow people to get to one place to another very quickly and easily. This transportation has greatly improved the ...

Understanding the Appeal to Force Fallacy
Understanding the Appeal to Force Fallacy The appeal to force fallacy is a rhetorical fallacy that relies on force or intimidation (scare tactics) to persuade an audience to accept a proposition or take a particular course of action. Understanding the Fallacy In Latin, the appeal to force fallacy is referred to as argumentum ad baculum, or, literally, argument to the cudgel. Its also sometimes referred to as the appeal to fear fallacy. Essentially, the argument appeals to the possibility of undesired, negative consequences that are often - though not always - tied to some sort of frightening or violent outcome that listeners will wish to avoid. In arguments that utilize this fallacy, the logic is not sound, nor is it the sole basis of the argument. Instead, there is an appeal to negative emotions and possibilities that have not been proven. Fear and logic become tied together in the argument. The fallacy occurs when a negative consequence is assumed without definitive proof; instead, an appeal is made to the possibility of the consequence and a false or exaggerated assumption is made. This fallacious argument may be made whether or not the person making the argument truly subscribes to their own argument. For instance, consider two factions at war. The leader of Faction A sends a message to their counterpart in Faction B, requesting a parlay to discuss the possibility of negotiating peace. During the war so far, Faction A has treated captives from Faction B reasonably well. Leader B, however, tells their second-in-command that they must not meet with Leader A because Faction A will turn around and brutally kill them all. Here, the evidence is that Faction A conducts themselves with honor and would not break the terms of the temporary truce, but Leader B discredits this because he is afraid of being killed. Instead, he appeals to that shared fear to convince the rest of Faction B that he is correct, despite the fact that his belief and current evidence are in conflict with each other. There is a non-fallacious variation of this argument, however. Lets say that Person X, who is a member of Group Y, lives under an oppressive regime. X knows that, if the regime discovers they are a member of Group Y, they will be put to death. X wants to live. Therefore, X will claim to not be a member of Group Y. This is not a fallacious conclusion, since it only says that X will claim to not be part of Y, not that X is not part of Y. Examples and Observations This kind of appeal is undoubtedly persuasive in certain circumstances. The robber who threatens a persons life will probably win the argument. But there are more subtle appeals to force such as the veiled threat that ones job is on the line.(Winifred Bryan Horner, Rhetoric in the Classical Tradition, St. Martins, 1988)The most obvious sort of force is the physical threat of violence or harm. The argument distracts us from a critical review and evaluation of its premises and conclusion by putting us into a defensive position. . . .But appeals to force are not always physical threats. Appeals to psychological, financial, and social harm can be no less threatening and distracting. (Jon Stratton, Critical Thinking for College Students, Rowman Littlefield, 1999)If the Iraqi regime is able to produce, buy, or steal an amount of highly-enriched uranium a little larger than a single softball, it could have a nuclear weapon in less than a year. And if we allow that to happen, a terrible line would be crossed. Saddam Hussein would be in a position to blackmail anyone who opposes his aggression. He would be in a position to dominate the Middle East. He would be in a position to threaten America. And Saddam Hussein would be in a position to pass nuclear technology to terrorists. . . .Knowing these realities, America must not ignore the threat gathering against us. Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof - the smoking gun - that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.(President George W. Bush, October 8, 2002)
